Day 11

Today I'm back on the Oregon coast and pleased to say that the weather was beautiful today. My goal today was to just pass through the rest of Oregon and make it to California. I hadn't really planned on taking any pictures unless there was something truly magnificent. I passed by easily a dozen or so places that I could have taken some great pictures, but I'd still be in Oregon if I had stopped at them all. Instead I just video taped them and noted the location for the next time I'm in the area (which I Know I will be soon enough again).

Typical southern Oregon coastline.

Southern Oregon was really impressive to me. Really great coastal scenes, some really large rocks in some places and other places were there were lots of smaller rocks closer together. It seemed their were many more scenic places and easier to get to than in northern Oregon. And the place was empty unlike the more northern areas. I hope this is a good sign of what is to come in Northern California.

Some of the many empty beaches of Southern Oregon.

But even with my goal of getting to California (only 150+ miles away, but I stop often) with as few long stops as possible there were two places that I just had to stop at.   The first was a pair of large sea stack/offshore hills that had a road that went all the way out on them.  It was a unmaintained and treacherous dirt road, I wasn't even sure if I could make it but I did. At some places I had to cross potholes 4 ft wide and 2 ft deep. I was sure I was going to bottom out, but I didn't. What I saw when I got there was probably one of the most impressive coast scenes I have seen in Oregon. I could have easily spent an entire day there. But the wind was blowing ferociously (something I now think is a regular 2pm thing around here) and there was only one place, which was luckily the best, where I was sheltered from the wind. It all goes well, it should be one of my best pictures of the Oregon coast.

You can drive right out onto this one.
The view once you get out there.

The second was a collection of large sea stacks just in the breaking waves. The light was really nice and after a quick dash across a highway and up a hill (and through some very thick brush) I got to a good vista where I could get a good shot. It was one of the very few places that had a beach where I didn't have to wait forever for the beach to be empty of people before I took the picture.

View after a short hike through some thick bushes.

After that I passed mile after mile of impressive coastal scenery. Then I finally crossed the California border. I made it about 30 miles south of the border to a town named 'Crescent' where I'm staying tonight. It was still a few hours before sunset so I drove around a little.  I didn't expect to find anything here but I found this really cool little lighthouse. After that I found a place to stay that was 'modem compatible'. Tonight I have to plan the next couples of days, reload film (I have close to 30 shots so far), upload these pages and do some laundry. Tomorrow I'm following the Redwood Highway south down the coast. Within 2-3 days I expect to be in San Francisco.
