Well if yesterday was as bad as it gets then today was as good as it gets. Things couldn't have been better. Crater Lake is probably the easiest place in the world to take pictures. Once you make it up onto Rim Drive (about 7500 ft), there is a scenic turn-out what seems to be every 300 ft or so. I barely had to get out of the car to take a picture. I never even had to pack everything up between shots. I probably took more pictures on this day along than in the last 3-4 days combined. I did have a few places where my insto-matic weather machine got the wind blowing but nothing out of control like the last two days.
Crater Lake is a truly an amazing place. The water was dark blue beyond belief. And this is a good summer to be there if you want to take pictures. Normally, they have boat tours around the lake but this summer all the boats are dry-docked for renovations so the lake was absolutely empty and pristine. It is such an amazingly beautiful place.
After almost a full day of touring the area, I set off for the coast again to pick up where I left off and to continue south into California. I had heard from someone at the lake that the weather was even worst and from what I can see tonight (I'm camping on Cape Argo) it still looks bad here. I sure hope it is better down south. By the end of tomorrow, I hope to be in Northern California, traveling south down the coast. |
